Orthodontics

We know that a lot of people suffer with crooked teeth. This is not because crooked teeth are painful but more because of the embarrassment they feel when they smile and feel self-conscious that there uneven crooked teeth are on display. Apart from the aesthetic look of crooked teeth, there is also the fact that when teeth are misaligned and overlapping they are more difficult to clean and that in turn can lead to infections, gum disease and eventually tooth loss.  We have helped many patients with their problem teeth and sent them on their way with bright even teeth and a dazzling smile.

There are several very good benefits from having orthodontic treatment to help your teeth attain a straighter and more even appearance. These are some of them:

  • It’s easier to clean making the risk of gum disease less
  • There’s less chance teeth will be accidentally damaged
  • Wear on the teeth will be less
  • Less preparation to teeth for any future cosmetic or restorative treatment
  • Relief of stress on the jaw

The Process

At Barnt Green Dental Centre, we know very well that your time is valuable but we are always focused on getting you the best result and that bright, even smile.   This is how it works:

  • At your first appointment (this will usually be complimentary 10 minute plus appointment for you to discuss what do you need without dentist) a brief examination will also be carried out to assess your suitability for the treatment that you are requesting. Our dentist will discuss all aspects of the treatment and probable outcome with you, including the cost and the time it will take to complete the treatment.
  • At your second appointment full examination will be undertaken including examining your dental records, a smile analysis, X-ray’s, photographs and impressions for models to be made. All this information will be compiled in order to come up with an accurate treatment plan. This appointment will usually last about three quarters of an hour.
  • At your third appointment, which should last about half an hour, with all the information now compiled, you and your dentist can talk through the different options recommended for you and the pros and cons of each, until you both agree on a final treatment plan.
  • At your fourth appointment your orthodontic appliance whether that is fixed braces or invisible treatment with Invisalign will be fitted and full instructions of how to care for your new device will be given to you.

All the way through your orthodontic treatment you’ll be asked to attend the surgery every 8 to 12 weeks so that your progress can be monitored. If you are having treatment with Invisalign aligners it will be at these points that you need to change to your next set of invisible braces. If you are having fixed braces it maybe time to have a look at the wires in case they need changing. If between appointments if you have any problem at all, please ring us

Your treatment will be considered to have finished once you are quite happy with the final position of your teeth and when your dentist judges but you can stop the treatment.  You will then be provided with a fixed or removable retainer that will help to keep your teeth in their newly established position. Reviews then come at about three months after treatment stopped, to ensure that all is going well.
